Kate Elsdon tells us about her experience of the Future Leader Award.
I actually did something really out of character and asked my manager to nominate me for the Future Leaders Award; I’m not normally particularly good at self promotion but am glad I did and would really recommend others to do the same! The application form was thought provoking, and the strict word count helped keep my answers concise. The interview was definitely the most challenging part though; whilst it was a pleasure to meet the panel of interviewers, some of the questions were really tough!
It was more than worth it though to get to the symposium, where I was honoured to meet the other finalists who were all inspiring and impressive but, above all, really friendly ladies. It was a great morning with some thought provoking key note speakers, but also slightly surreal – particularly seeing my parents , who wanted to come and support me, talking to my boss – definitely a case of two worlds colliding, but it was also nice for all of them to see a different side of me.
Since becoming a finalist I have taken on additional responsibilities and been promoted in work, I’ve been named as one of the most influential women in the city by City AM, had a special mention in a PwC News article and have been invited to speak at a careers day for 16 year old girls about the different career options they have. The most valuable take away for me though has been the network of other future leaders I’ve gained, several of whom I’m meeting next week for a post Christmas catch up! Through that group I have been able to introduce several members of my team to a networking group aimed at young women working in the city, so the Future Leaders Award has also helped me contribute to the development of other Future Leaders.
Kate was a 2015 Future Leader Award finalist and shall be sitting on the 2016 Candidate Selection Panel.
