Become a Media Supporter!

30 March, 2015 by WIC

Karla Gowlett

We are currently looking for reciprocal relationships with organisations and groups to help ensure the Future Leaders Award is widely promoted.

Typically, Women in the City Future Leaders Award applicants are at the transition point between a management and leadership role and will form the pipeline of women who will reach senior executive and Board positions.

At a relatively young age, they are making a contribution beyond their functional, technical or specialist area, are committed to their personal and professional development and have a heightened sense of self-awareness.

The prizes and further benefits to being part of the Future Leaders Award process can be found here.

Do you have access to women who would benefit from this Award?

We would be able to offer the following benefits:

  • Your company will appear on the media supporter’s page on the Award website, with a brief description and link to your website.
  • Your company will be listed in the souvenir programme for the Award Symposium
  • 10% discount on tickets for the Award Symposium
  • Acknowledgement of your being a Media Supporter via Twitter (4,700+ followers)

In return we would ask you to:

  • Provide information about FL Award on your website with a link to the FL Award website
  • Promotion of the FL Award to your database of members/subscribers
  • Promotion of the FL Award via social media sites
  • Other sources of relevant promotion (eg offline publications, blog posts) as detailed below:

The exact nature of our Media Supporters relationship can be as simple as including details of The Future Leaders Award information in your newsletter or a feature on your website.

Please get in touch with Helen Marsters to discuss further if you are interested.

Amber Wilkinson 2012 Winner recommends nominating for The Future Leaders Award

26 March, 2015 by WIC

aw_cropped

We recently interviewed Amber Wilkinson, Future Leaders Award Winner 2012,  and currently Head of Finance Business Partnering at AXA PPP Healthcare.

How did winning the Future Leaders Award impacted on your career?

Winning the award significantly raised  my profile both within my organisation and externally. It is a unique addition to my CV which provides a great talking point in discussions.

I started a new role just after winning the award in 2012, and am sure that my involvement in the award played a key part in my getting the job. It also helped me get to know a lot of my new colleagues as the award became very high profile within my organization.

Why nominate someone for the Future Leaders Award?

It’s a great feeling to be recognized in this way. Women can sometimes lack in self belief and a nomination like this can often come as a real surprise, and act as a real boost and opportunity to reflect on our own successes.

I would absolutely recommend nominating people for the award, in fact I have nominees in mind myself.

Why take the time to complete the Application Form ?

Filling in the Application Form not only gives you the chance to win, but it is a valuable exercise in stepping back and thinking about your own achievements. That in itself is a really positive experience and an opportunity to take stock in a way that we don’t normally do.

Any other advice?

  • My advice would be to have the confidence to do what you want to do or at least try.
  • Surround yourself by people who aren’t afraid to tell you how good you are and use that positive energy to boost your confidence when you need to.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for feedback as people aren’t always forthcoming with it, and may assume you don’t need it. With that in mind, always take the opportunity to praise, compliment and thank women you work with and come across.
  • We need to help each other be as confident as we possibly can be!

Two Winners Announced for 2014 Future Leaders Award

14 July, 2014 by WIC

After an unprecedented raft of incredible nominees, this year’s Judging Panel found it impossible to select one overall winner from the 5 Finalists.

After hours of deliberation, the panel agreed that both Dr Deborah Gill (Interim Director, UCL Medical School, University College London) and Naomi Bowman (Senior Manager, Governance & Operations – Group Monitor Liaison Office, HSBC Holdings Plc) should be the joint winners of the Future Leaders Award.

Whilst they are working in vastly different fields and at different stages in their careers, their joint win highlights how being a leader invokes a huge variety of different skills to lead and inspire others.

Taking into account the various skills set and progression pathways, the Judges felt that, in each of their sectors, Gill and Bowman are both great Future Leaders.

However, despite the difference in both their skills and industries, they do have one of the most important attributes in common: the possession of the kind of inspiration needed to be an outstanding aspirational role model.

Managing a career is like a game of Snakes and Ladders

31 May, 2014 by WIC

We’ve heard about the glass ceiling, read the research on the glass cliff, believe it can be because of the sticky floor and know that it can sometimes feel as if we’re negotiating an impenetrable concrete maze.

Whichever it is managing your career can be challenging in today’s world of work.

Organisations are continuously changing, career paths are less obvious so planning and managing you career can feel like a game of snakes and ladders.

Our Symposium Panellist, Bev White,  Managing Director, Penna Career Services, Penna will explain why being self aware, agile and knowing how to manage your brand internally and externally are key to helping you master the game.

How well do we understand our international counterparts?

11 May, 2014 by WIC

Richard Cook of  Global Excellence Ltd, a leading cross-cultural and global mobility services provider will be one of the Panellists at our Symposium on 11 July which is being held as part of our Future Leaders Award Celebration Breakfast and award ceremony.

“In today’s busy world we all work globally – sometimes we fly and visit but mostly we just sit.  We spend our time at our desks, workstations or in video conferencing rooms whilst the world, in all its diversity comes to us. This ease of access can lead us to a false sense of comfort,” says Richard.

“We may believe that we understand our international counterparts but do we really – how culturally savvy are you?” he asks.

Richard’s presentation will take a brief but profound dive below the surface of day to day international business encounters to explore what is really going on and provides tips on how to be more effective by  growing your cultural savvy in an increasingly complex world.
