Respiratory Registrar, North East London
I’m really excited to have been selected as a finalist. I am grateful for the support of Professor Jane Dacre: a source of constant encouragement and inspiration. The interview process really challenged me, and whether or not I win I will take forward a new perspective on how to face future challenges in medicine and education.
Dr Laura-Jane Smith gained her medical degree at Cambridge University and moved to London for a series of highly competitive jobs, continuing her training in Respiratory medicine.
For the last year she has been a member of the Academic Centre for Medical Education (ACME) at UCL. She has a portfolio of responsibilities including: undergraduate and postgraduate high stakes exams; development of the use of an ePortfolio; support for junior doctors as teachers; and encouraging UCL Medical School’s growing use of social media.
She contributes to a number of research streams and has found time to pursue a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education, and lead a highly successful public engagement project.
At the time of entering the award, LJ was Clinical Teaching Fellow, UCL Medical School and although she has now returned clinical training she maintains her links with UCL as an Honorary Fellow.
